PROLOGUE

“Never” I shouted to no avail, the man came closer telling me to come with him that I would be safe with him, a lie. I tried to turn and run but I could not move. His hands reached for me, his eyes bottomless pits of darkness…

CHAPTER ONE

The morning light flooded through the window, the beams reflecting off of the millions of sparkling things in my room. The memories from my dream come flooding back to me and I almost start to cry but I swallow the lump in my throat and blink to clear the tears from my eyes. “Christina, time to get up!” Judy called “Oh, and Lottie wants play!”

I stick my head under the pillow so I can’t hear her as much. Judy shouted for me twice more, then fell silent. I then decide to try to go back to sleep. Just when I was starting to drift off Lottie ran into the room and climbed on top of me and shouted in my ear "Get up lazy butt! I want you to play with me!"

"Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo." I groan.

I was hoping she would go away, but it was just my luck that she stayed perched on top of me.  I rolled over trying to get her off of me and she fell off, but as to be expected she climbed back up.

'Get up, get up!  Come on Christina, you promised you would play today." She whines.

"Only so that you would leave me alone." I mutter into my pillow.

“Huh?  What did you just say I didn’t quite catch that.” She practically shouts in my ear.

“Nothing, I didn’t say anything!” I shout desperate to keep her from shouting at me again.  My sister has this really shrill voice that makes it feel like your head has screws being drilled into it, and it’s being chewed up, spit out, and sat upon by an ogre.  All at the same time.

“Well come on then, what are you waiting for?” she exclaims jumping up and down enthusiastically.

I roll to the side and swing my feet out of bed.  Lottie finally leaves and, I go to get dressed.

I go out front to where Lottie is bouncing a tennis ball off the garage door.  “So, what do you want to do?” I ask.

“Oh. Uhm, I don’t really know” she responded carelessly.

“Are you kidding me!” I say angrily but trying to control myself so I don’t shout at her and get myself in trouble “You make me get up early, get dressed, and come outside to play with you and you don’t know what you want to do!”

She draws back looking shocked and almost… frightened?  Why would she be frightened?

“Y-y-you h-have-” she stops, then whispers one more word so quietly I almost couldn’t hear her “wings.”
