Overview

Prehistoric is, as suggested, an incredibly old language that has been spoken before the conception of any known time period. It is exclusively oral, like Earthen, with no written language. Because of this, the tracking of this language’s history gets difficult in some time periods and not all information is present.

Prehistoric has mostly ranged throughout the entire charted world and was only ever rivaled by Tyrian in terms of popularity. Dialect varied greatly because of this giant range, so much that two speakers might not have been able to communicate effectively if they lived far away enough.

History

Pre-Dating the Regal Sisters

Prehistoric was the most-spoken language for millennia before the rise of other languages. It is also considered the building block that most other languages branch out on.

The language was said to have been spoken by both ponies and non-pony species, and the unicorn tribe was the last to stop speaking it when Celestia started conquering the continent.

The Princess’ Reign

Prehistoric suffers its fall during the reign of the regal sisters; Common becomes the most popular language in its place. Celestia’s insistence on using Common takes a heavy toll on the language. Because Prehistoric has never had a written form, and it can be replaced unlike Earthen, it eventually became a dead language and is no longer used.

Modern-Day

Prehistoric is still a dead language but some historians are putting its spoken form together. It’s unlikely to ever be revived and used commonly, but it may prove to be useful somehow in the future.

Trivia

  • Because Tyrian has a written alphabet, Prehistoric is considered a less advanced language compared to the former in its time period.
  • Some puzzles across the Equine continent may require an answer spoken in Prehistoric, so archaeologists have become increasingly interested in the language.
  • It is said that another continent on the planet has creatures that still speak a variation of Prehistoric, but the continent has never been found and the rumors cannot be proved or disproved.
