Book Talks: The Fire Eternal

Also a rant about Dark Fire. Spoilers ahead. As always.

I finished reading The Fire Eternal a week or two ago. This book was great. Like Fire Star, it left me going insane. I still don't like Lucy, but David came back, which is great, right? Haha, I might think that if I wasn't almost done with Dark Fire. No, David's a terrible dad. His reunion with Zanna and Alexa in The Fire Eternal is sweet, but in Dark Fire, my god. The direction taken with him being a Fain and "illuminated to" Grockle is interesting for the lore, sure, but for David as a person? As a father? Insufferable. David caring more about his "destiny" that's "above human understanding" rather than his family is...something. It doesn't sit right with me. Look, the world won't save itsel…

Book Talks: The Fire Eternal (So Far)

Spoilers ahead if you haven’t read this book.

Why am I making this? Because I can’t sleep and I’m thinking about this book. How far am I in the book? Not far, but far enough. Here are my thoughts on the characters and plot so far.

  • Zanna. I like the way she’s written. Sad, dark, sort of hostile—David’s death has had a massive impact on her and it shows in everything she does.
  • Would shop at Zanna’s store 100%
  • I absolutely cannot stand Lucy. She was sweet in the earlier books but she grew into an unbearable brat. I get that she’s upset over David, but does she have to be like this? Maybe she will redeem herself later in the book.
  • Gwendolen, I love her new powers. Unique and unexpected for a Pennykettle dragon.
  • I love Gretel even more now.
  • LIZ AND ART…

Book Talks: Fire Star

  • 1 Fire Star Discussion
  • 2 Fire Star Quotes I Think About a Lot
    • 2.1 This Interaction
    • 2.2 This Towards the End
    • 2.3 This Poem

WARNING: MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD. CHARACTER DEATHS DISCUSSED.

My internet is bad and my heart is sad, so let's talk about Fire Star by Chris d'Lacey. Why is my heart sad? Because of this damn "children's" book, that's why. "Children's" is in quotes for reasons we will discuss later. I don't know why this book was in the library at my elementary school all those years ago. If I read it back then, I skimmed it, which was probably for the best. I remembered nothing. I was not prepared.

I picked up this book after I finished classes this summer because I finally had time to read. I was in the woods because I hadn't been able to get away fro…

Book Talks: Icefire

I read Icefire (Chris d'Lacey) a while ago. I didn't make a blog post about it until now because I never got around to it.

It takes a massive turn from the light magic and dragon whimsy of The Fire Within to introduce serious dragon lore and the evil sibyl Gwilanna. (Gwillana? My internet is too slow to check the spelling and the book is somewhere else.) The pacing is slow, but it's a measured slowness, not a boring slowness. We are gradually immersed in the past world of dragons, particularly the life of the dragon Gawain, and what might be waiting for our Pennykettle dragons in the future. And there's a mysterious scientist -- have to say that is one of my career aspirations. And there are polar bears and a magic snowball that gets eaten by …
