Mommy goes to Kindergarten

One day, Mommy set off for kindergarten. She had everything she needed, but a friend. She was thinking of how wonderful it would be…

She traipsed down the hall toward the classroom. She burst in. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” The teacher chuckled. “Why, welcome, Mommy.” The class snickered as she walked to her seat.

Soon after, the teacher marked the day on the calendar. “Class, it is the 31st of August!” “Already?” said Mommy, delighted. She was going to love kindergarten!

Mommy doodled little stick figures all over her paper in art. “Teacher, I made art!” Mommy yelled. The teacher teaching next door poked her head in. “Keep it down!”

The teacher let Mommy show her drawing to the class. “Art!” announced Mommy proudly. One little boy frowned.  “To me, it just looks like you scribbled on your drawing.”

“Lunchtime!” The teacher gathered up the students. Most – three-fourths, Mommy reckoned – had lunchboxes. Mommy did not. She felt as if she did not fit in, being swallowed by lunchboxes.

When the class entered the cafeteria, Mommy’s nose was filled with good smells from all around. Her stomach grumbled. She was starving!

She sat down at a table with her mush-filled tray. No one sat next to her. One girl that considered sitting at the same table finally wrinkled her nose, saying, “You’re gross!” and stalked off.

Poor Mommy. Could her day get any worse? At least the food tasted tolerable. Mommy savored it till the end.

Back inside the classroom, it was science time. Mommy was quite glum as she investigated her yellow, red and green apple seeds.

After science it was recess. Mommy’s hat wouldn’t fit. She eventually gave up and walked out with a wrinkled, foolish-looking mess smack-dab on her head (without even realizing it had been upside down).

Mommy was the slowest in her class – proven when all the swings were taken up before Mommy even got off the sidewalk. Mommy felt discouraged. She had nobody to play with…

The teacher saw her on the ground, crying. “Mommy, what’s wrong?” “Nobody likes me!” “Oh, Mommy, you’re a wonderful person with a wide sense of humor. It’s a wonder nobody will play with you.”

The teacher stood up and blew her whistle. “Claire! CLAIRE!” A young girl jumped off her swing. “What?” “Mommy, this is Claire. Claire, this is Mommy.” “Hi, Mommy! You look nice,” said Claire.

Even though Mommy was shocked, the two ran off together up the jungle gym. “Mommy, did I ever tell you about the time I tried to do a cartwheel…?” Mommy grinned. A new friend!

Mommy set off to kindergarten on September 1st, 2016. She had everything she needed… and a friend!

The End
