The House of the Rising Sun is one of my all-time favorite poems, specifically the 1925 version of it. I always loved the poem and decided that it’d make a great Delta Blues song. The only problem is that the 1925 version is about a girl.
I mean, I am a girl, but I don’t sound like one, so, for a school project I ventured to rewrite the 1925 version of House of the Rising Sun to make it gender neutral. It’s short, sure, but no shorter than the original poem.
I really liked how it came out, and I wanted to share it.
This song is merely a fast swung Delta Blues song.
With all that said, I hope you enjoy!
House of the Rising Sun (circa ~1930)[]
by Dashie
From the house in New Orleans
One called the Rising Sun
It ruins more lives every day
Great God and I for one.
-
There was a time my mother said
”Don’t you go that way.”
But as you do, and foolish I was,
My mind led me astray.
-
Nowhere else would a gambler be
Cheaters and rounders too.
For in that House of the Rising Sun
They take advantage of you.
-
For all my delta family
Don’t do as I have done.
Stay far away from New Orleans
And the House of the Rising Sun.
Stay far away from New Orleans
And the House of the Rising Sun.
